"Good art is real art, and real art is an extension of you.” — R. “Mastro” Mastrolonardo (My high school art teacher)
Sometimes a moment reveals a hidden surprise. I try to capture some of that in my paintings. A challenge for me, that I am trying to grow into with my work, is how to convey an ethereal feeling of that moment or experience without distracting our communication with too much visual or emotional concreteness. My style is still developing toward this goal, and I find myself using broken or fuzzy boundaries and colors to help soften the boundaries of reality. I find that this can help convey some sense of movement over time, time dilation, dreamlike qualities, or scintillation. The idea is to move away from the feeling of a photographic snapshot toward one of an experience drawn out through a different kind of time.
While many of my paintings are inspired by a specific such moment in a place and time, I also hope you can experience each painting in your own way and with your own interpretation. That is one reason that my titles are broad and for the most part, not geographically specific. I am always interested to hear how a painting feels to you, so please send me a note if you have something to share.
